In this age of information when searching for something on the Internet people normally look it up in popular search engines like: Google, Yahoo, Alta Vista MSN, Alexa, and Gigablast. They do not go beyond the first or second page of the searched results i.e. the first 8-16 of the hundreds of millions of results found by the search engines. If the information is available on the Internet, it is found, more often than not, in these first few search results. Browsing through the top websites thrown up by the search engines related to the information suffices. Studies on internet search behavior and eye tracking have confirmed this.

My first experience with search engine optimization was in 1997 when our team developed an IT recruitment portal and one of the challenges was to drive clients and job-seekers to it. At that time, there was no Google. Yahoo was the dominant search engine with Altavista close behind. Internet was not as crowded as it is today and fine-tuning the meta-tags was sufficient to improve rankings.

I disagree with the comment made by some web developers that all the good domain names are taken. Search engine optimization, or seo, does not depend heavily on the www name you select. For my clients just starting out the decision choosing small business website names has never been an issue. It is a fact that all the 3 character and 4 character domain names with the key extensions are taken. Furthermore, I agree that a vast number of choice domain names are no longer available; however, the selection of a suitable www domain for your small business is possible if you remain flexible.

You ever find yourself telling others that you’re a Newbie? Don’t do it! It’s bad for you. If you keep referring to yourself as a Newbie then you are cheating yourself.

“Oh this is too advanced for me - I’m just a Newbie.”
