I was impressed with his presentation, and he said one thing that really had an impact on me. Dr. Oz said that we spend far too much money in this country on looking for cures for diseases like cancer or diabetes. The money would be better spent on prevention. Early detection is one thing, and early prevention is another thing. Type-two diabetes is a preventable disease. In most cases, it is a product of diet. You can prevent or even reverse diabetes and prediabetes with proper nutrition.
The American Diabetes Association reports that 60 million people in the United States have prediabetes. This is a condition in which a person has elevated glucose levels, but the levels are not yet to the point of being diagnosed as diabetic. Prediabetics have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney stones, and other serious illnesses. By reversing the state of prediabetes, a person could prevent the onset of serious illness.
Here are a few ways to reverse diabetes, as well as all the other diseases that diabetics become more susceptible to.
- Lose weight through a combination of diet and exercise.
- Eat high fiber meals. This can be in the form of a good high fiber diet or in dietary fiber supplements.
- Participate in daily exercise. The Diabetes Prevention program states that daily exercise can reduce a person’s risk of diabetes by 58%.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Believe it or not, lack of sleep will raise your glucose level. Failing to get a good night’s sleep is equivalent to gaining 20 pounds!
- Avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague. High fructose corn syrup and other hidden sugars are the number one cause of diabetes in America.
